What makes an ADA porta potty different from a standard one?

An ADA porta potty is about twice as wide as a standard unit. The PolyJohn We'll Care III measures 85.2 inches wide and has a 60-inch turning circle inside. The floor sits at ground level, so a wheelchair rolls straight in. PolyJohn says this unit is designed to exceed ADA portable toilet requirements.

The We'll Care III also has a 50-gallon tank and grab bars set at 33 inches. Its ground-level floor helps walkers, strollers, and parents with small kids too.

How many accessible units does my event need?

At least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster should be accessible. Every cluster needs at least 1. A row of 12 units needs 1 accessible unit. A row of 30 needs 2. This comes from section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards, as the U.S. Access Board explains it.

Units in one clusterMinimum accessible units
1–201
21–402
41–603
61–804

Each separate cluster counts on its own. For example, a festival may have toilets by the stage and by the food court. Each of those spots needs at least 1 accessible unit. Read the Access Board guide to toilet rooms for the source.

The Boise Parks event application asks for the number of accessible toilets. Units used only by construction workers are exempt under section 203.2, as covered on our construction porta potty page.

Where can an ADA unit go, and will it fit?

An ADA unit needs a flat, firm spot about 8 feet by 8 feet. It also needs a clear path for a wheelchair. The We'll Care III weighs 395 pounds and stands 85.2 inches wide, so it never fits a side gate. A driveway, patio, parking lot, or level lawn works best.

  • Good surfaces: concrete, asphalt, packed gravel, and dry, short lawn.
  • Avoid: slopes, loose gravel, curbs, steps, and soggy ground.
  • Truck access: the truck must get within about 30 feet of the spot.
  • Path: keep cords, hoses, and tent stakes off the route to the door.
  • Street spots: a unit on an Ada County street or sidewalk needs an ACHD Temporary Use Permit.

Face the door toward the path, not toward a wall or fence. Leave room in front of the door for a wheelchair to turn.

Is a wheelchair-accessible unit the same as an ADA unit?

A wheelchair-accessible unit and an ADA unit are not always the same thing. The PolyJohn Comfort XL is roomy at 62 inches square, with a 32-inch door. PolyJohn does not call the Comfort XL ADA, though. Only the We'll Care III and Satellite Freedom class units carry the maker's ADA statement.

What happens from booking to pickup for an ADA unit?

An ADA rental follows the same 5 steps as a standard rental, with more care on placement. Send a photo of the spot first. For events, the unit arrives up to 1 business day early. Monthly units arrive on your start date. Monthly billing stops when you call or text for pickup.

  1. Photo. Show the spot and the path from the truck to it.
  2. Book. Pay by card. Events cancel free up to 24 hours before delivery.
  3. Delivery. The driver sets the unit level with the door facing the path.
  4. Service. Event units arrive cleaned and stocked. Monthly units get 1 service each week.
  5. Pickup. Events end the next business day. Monthly pickups happen within 2 business days of your request.

Long-term ADA rentals

For example, a family member in a wheelchair may need a unit during a long remodel. That rental costs $215 per 28-day cycle plus a one-time $75 delivery and pickup in Zone 1. See monthly rental terms for billing.

Snow, ice, and heat

The ground-level floor means snow and ice sit right at the door. Keep the path shoveled from November through March, when antifreeze goes in the tank at no charge. In summer, a shaded spot keeps the larger unit more comfortable.

Real questions, straight answers

Questions renters ask about this

Do I need an ADA unit if no one in a wheelchair is coming?

For a small private party, the choice is yours. For public events, park events, and permit site plans, plan at least 1 accessible unit per cluster. Guests with walkers or strollers use it too.

What would a handicapped unit cost for the weekend, delivered and picked up?

An ADA unit costs $235 per event, before 6% tax. That price covers drop-off up to 1 business day before and pickup the next business day after. Zone 1 delivery is part of the price, and Zone 2 adds $45.

I'd like to rent a handicapped porta potty for about four hours. Do you charge by the hour?

Event pricing has no hourly or daily charge. A 4-hour event pays the same $235 as a full weekend. The unit arrives the business day before and leaves the business day after.

I'd only need one of them to be handicap accessible. Is that okay?

One accessible unit covers a cluster of up to 20 units under the 5% rule. A cluster of 21 to 40 units needs 2. If your units sit in two separate spots, each spot needs its own accessible unit.

Does the ADA unit come with a place to wash hands?

Plan on a separate hand-wash station next to the ADA unit. A two-sink PolyJohn Bravo costs $125 per event. Set the Bravo on the same flat path so a wheelchair user can reach the sinks.

Does a construction site need an ADA porta potty?

Section 203.2 of the ADA Standards exempts units used only by construction workers. If the public visits the site, or a worker uses a wheelchair, add an ADA unit. A monthly ADA unit costs $215 per 28-day cycle.

Will an ADA unit fit in my backyard?

The We'll Care III is about 85 inches wide, so it cannot pass through a side gate. Most homes place it in the driveway or on a flat front lawn. The truck must get within about 30 feet of the spot.
