What does OSHA 1928.110 require for a farm porta potty rental in Idaho?

OSHA rule 29 CFR 1928.110 applies when 11 or more workers do field hand labor on any day. The farm must provide 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for each 20 workers or fraction of 20. Both must sit within a quarter-mile walk of where the crew works.

  • The handwashing facility needs potable water, soap, and single-use towels.
  • Toilets and sinks must sit close to each other.
  • Where terrain blocks that, place them at the closest point a vehicle can reach.
  • Field work of 3 hours or less per day, travel included, is exempt.

Idaho has no state OSHA plan, so the federal OSHA Boise Area Office covers private farms.

Harvest crews that move between fields

The quarter-mile rule means a crew spread across a large field may need units at 2 points. For example, 30 workers on two blocks a mile apart need 2 toilets and 2 hand-wash stations. Put one pair at each block. Tell us before the crew moves so the units can follow.

Set each toilet and station side by side at the field edge. Pick a spot the truck can reach on dry, firm ground within about 30 feet.

  • Avoid freshly irrigated ground; the truck can sink in wet soil.
  • Keep units out of the path of sprayers, swathers, and trucks.
  • Face doors away from the prevailing wind on open ground.

Summer harvest in the valley often runs above 90°F. Place units in shade where you can, and add a weekly visit for big crews. Moves between fields are quoted when you book.

Serving Canyon County farms and seed fields

Canyon County had 2,311 farms in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, the most of any Idaho county. Crews there work seed crops, hay, corn, hops, mint, onions, and fruit. Nampa farms sit in Zone 1 with delivery included, and Caldwell, Middleton, Parma, Wilder, and Melba farms add $45.

Canyon County is a world hub for vegetable seed, with the top U.S. rank for carrot and onion seed. Seed fields bring short, busy hand-labor windows like roguing and detasseling.

Road and health rules in Canyon County

Roads outside Nampa and Caldwell belong to four highway districts: Nampa Highway District No. 1, Notus-Parma No. 2, Golden Gate No. 3, and Canyon No. 4. Ask the district before setting a unit on a road shoulder. Units on your own field edge need no road permit. Southwest District Health covers sanitation questions in Canyon County.

See local details on the Canyon County porta potty rental page.

U-pick farms, orchards, and pumpkin patches

A U-pick farm or pumpkin patch serves the public. Under the ADA 5% rule, at least 1 unit in each cluster should be accessible. A season-long ADA unit costs $215 per 28 days. Pair it with a standard unit at $165 and a hand-wash station at $140 near the picking rows.

Visitors handle fruit and then eat it, so a hand-wash station by the entrance makes sense. Weekend crowds can be sized like an event; our porta potty count guide has the guest charts.

  • Orchards around Emmett in Gem County are Zone 2 and add $45.
  • Rent by the 28-day cycle for the whole picking season.
  • Call or text for pickup when the season ends; no new cycle is billed.

For one festival weekend, an ADA porta potty rental on event pricing may cost less.

Dairies, feedlots, and farm shops

Dairies and feedlots run 365 days a year. A monthly unit at $165 per 28 days fits year-round crews. From November to March, antifreeze goes into the toilet tank at no charge. Hand-wash water can freeze below 32°F, so plan a heated option for winter mornings.

Livestock can rub against or tip a unit. Set units outside pens and away from gates where cattle move. The renter pays repair cost when a unit is moved or tipped by others, so placement matters.

  • Pick a spot on gravel or concrete near the milk barn or shop.
  • Keep a clear lane so the service truck avoids feed alleys.
  • Crews over 10 people can add a second weekly service.

What a farm rental costs

A farm rental bills every 28 days with weekly service included. One toilet costs $165 and one hand-wash station costs $140. For example, a 25-person crew needs 2 of each, which is $610 per 28 days. Delivery is a one-time $75 in Zone 1, and Zone 2 adds $45.

Crew sizeUnitsPer 28 days, before tax
11–201 toilet + 1 hand-wash$305
21–402 toilets + 2 hand-wash$610
41–603 toilets + 3 hand-wash$915

A season shorter than 4 weeks still pays one 28-day cycle. Approved farm accounts can pay by invoice on Net 15 terms. Details on billing are on the monthly porta potty rental page.

Real questions, straight answers

Questions renters ask about this

Do I need a hand-wash station with each farm toilet?

OSHA 1928.110 calls for 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility per 20 field workers. The two must sit close together. A two-sink PolyJohn Bravo station has fresh water, soap, and towels, which meets that pairing for most crews.

How often do you service units out in the field? Once a week or every two weeks?

Every farm rental gets one service visit per week, included in the 28-day price. The driver pumps the tank, cleans, restocks paper, and refills hand-wash water. Big crews or hot weeks can add an extra visit for $65.

Our crew only works mornings. Do we still need toilets?

OSHA's field rule does not require toilets for field work of 3 hours or less per day. That time includes travel to and from the field. Once shifts run longer, or the crew reaches 11 people, the 1-per-20 rule applies.

Can your truck get down a farm lane to the field?

Our truck handles gravel lanes and dry field roads. It needs to stop within about 30 feet of the spot on firm ground. Muddy fields after irrigation are the main problem, so pick a dry edge or a lane corner.

We run a U-pick farm on weekends. Can we rent by the month?

Monthly rentals fit a U-pick season well. Each unit bills every 28 days with weekly cleaning, so it stays fresh for Saturday crowds. Tell us your busiest day, and we will aim to service the units right before it.

Do you deliver to farms across the river in Oregon?

Farms near Ontario, Nyssa, and Vale in Malheur County are in Zone 3, which adds $85 to delivery. Oregon runs its own state OSHA program, so check Oregon rules for field sanitation there.
